With a pinch of salt…
The Cornish Sea Salt Company wanted to expand into a new range of ceramic products to accompany their established sea salt condiment collections. They asked us to help them investigate product feasibility and commissioned us to design and model a series of bespoke ceramic products. Working closely with their marketing team, we designed concepts for a range of kitchen salt pigs and table top pinch pots.
As Cornish Sea Salt is deeply rooted within the Cornish coastline, we delved into the world of shells formations, a fitting departure point for our design process. The organic shapes reflect and embrace their pure and natural brand ethos and becomes as a point of difference from those already available on the market. Practicality coupled with simple aesthetics in form and colour, were key elements of the design brief. We produced a number of form study prototypes (mock-ups), enabling Cornish Sea Salt to communicate the designs to manufactures and ceramicists, helping them evaluate production methods and cost feasibility. Eventually Cornish ceramicists Phil Read (mould development from his studio in Lelant) and Tony Swanson (pot production, Alicium Ceramics, St Erth) were commissioned by Cornish Sea Salt to bring the ceramic products to life.
We could go on and describe how great they’ve turned out, but why not visit the shop and have a look for yourself.
